Geophysical logging of boreholes, sometimes known as wireline logging and provide invaluable information about sub-surface conditions. Because the geophysical sensors can be placed within the formation of interest far higher resolution and accuracy can be achieved over surface measurements. These greatly ease exploration programs for minerals or groundwater, and on an engineering scale can provide additional information concerning soil and rock conditions that may be encountered during construction of major structures.
Although borehole logging is standard on petroleum exploration boreholes, it is less frequently used in boreholes for other purposes. Thankfully most of the technologies developed in the oil industry are scalable thus many borehole probes in existence today have their roots in the oil industry but have great application in mineral and groundwater investigation.
